T.J. Ewing schedules tough competition by design, to see what his Monterey Trail Mustangs have and what they need to work on.

Effort is never an issue for Ewing and crew, and it wasn’t in opening losses to No. 1 Folsom and national powerhouse De La Salle. On Friday in Mountain View, No. 7 Monterey Trail beat Central Coast Section powerhouse Saint Francis 28-7, punctuated by an 84-yard interception return for a touchdown by Fata Puloka, who also forced a fumble inside the 1.

Ali Collier rushed for 153 yards and caught a touchdown pass for Monterey Trail, which started last season 0-5 and recovered to reach the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship.
